MiniDisc - from 1992 to 2025

This talk will introduce the MiniDisc audio storage format developed by Sony in the early 1990s and follow its evolution, the rise of competing formats and eventual demise. The unlikely revival of the format will be showcased, with a focus on the online community of collectors, users, refurbishers, modders and hackers that has sprung up around MiniDisc in recent years. Finally, the experience of owning and taking care of an MD portable recorder in 2025 will be discussed, highlighting common failure modes of these aging devices and best maintenance practices to keep enjoying the format for years to come.
