A New History of the World Wide Web
Prof Dr. Gabriele Balbi
This talk will summarise the findings of a recently completed research project, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation, which examined the history of the World Wide Web in partnership with CERN in Geneva. It will focus on the early days of the Web at CERN, the people and ideas involved in the project, the reasons behind the confusion between the Internet and the Web, why the Web was called the Web, its main competitors and a few failed ideas connected with the World Wide Web (WWW). The aim is to understand how this everyday tool and service came into being.
